Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data Hey Ireland collects when you use heyireland.app or the Hey Ireland Android app, why, and what you can do about it.

Last updated: 11 October 2026

Who we are

Hey Ireland is responsible for this website and the app. You can contact us at contact@heyireland.app.

No account needed

You can read everything on Hey Ireland without an account. The site has no sign-up, and we do not ask visitors for their name, email address or any other details.

Cookies and local storage

The site stores only these items in your browser:

  • A cookie that remembers the language you choose.
  • An entry in your browser's local storage that remembers light or dark mode. It never leaves your device.
  • A cookie that records whether you accepted or declined Google Analytics. It lasts 6 months, and then the banner asks you again. To change your choice sooner, use the Cookie settings link in the footer. It deletes this cookie and the Google Analytics cookies, and the banner shows again.
  • The Google Analytics cookies, _ga and one whose name starts with _ga_, which let Google Analytics know when your browser comes back. The site sets them only if you accept Google Analytics. They last 2 years.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics loads only after you accept it in the cookie banner. If you decline, your browser sends nothing to Google, and the site works the same. If you accept, Google Analytics records the pages you open, the site that sent you, the filters you use in the schools directory and the links you follow to school websites, along with your browser, device and approximate location. It never receives what you type in the site's search boxes. We use the reports to learn what readers look for on Hey Ireland. Google deletes the data tied to your browser after 14 months. We do not let Google use the data for advertising. Our legal basis is your consent.

Server logs

Like any web server, our server receives your IP address, browser details and the pages you request. It keeps them in technical logs, which we use to keep the site secure and running. The logs have a fixed size limit, and the oldest entries are deleted automatically. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website.

Images from our storage provider

Some images load straight from our file storage provider, Supabase. Your browser requests them from Supabase, which receives your IP address as any web server does.

The Android app

The Hey Ireland Android app shows this website and nothing else. It collects no data of its own. The website inside the app shows the same cookie banner and uses Google Analytics only if you accept. Links to other websites open in your phone's browser.

Emails you send us

If you email us, we use your message and email address only to reply to you.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal data. Only the service providers named on this page and the company that hosts our server handle it, and only to run Hey Ireland for us. If you accept Google Analytics, Google handles that data as our processor and may transfer it to the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive it in a portable format. To do this, email contact@heyireland.app. You can also complain to Ireland's Data Protection Commission at www.dataprotection.ie(opens in new tab).

Children

Hey Ireland is not aimed at children under 16.

Changes to this policy

We publish any change on this page and update the date at the top.
